Known and Used Family Surnames
Ghossein El-Ghossein Families Stories Stories from Hadath Al Jebbeh From Tony Doumit Al-Ghossain and as they appear on his family web site www.ghossain.com The Family came from Al Akoura (in Mount Lebanon Province, Jbeil Caza) to Kfarhatna (in North Provine, Batroun Caza). Some settled there and the rest moved to Ain El Qabou (in Mount Lebanon Province, North Matn Caza) near Baskinta. Then, some moved to Zahle Caza (in Bekaa Province). The al-Ghossain family, the al-Gemayel family, and the Maqsoud family, according to the great Lebanese genealogist Essa Eskander al-Ma’louf were originally one family, and were originally from Geage a town in the mountain of the district of Byblos from where the al-Ghossain moved to Aqoura a nearby mountain town, where up till now pieces of land, and a fountain is still named after the family name. Due to civil strife in the Aqoura in the dark years of the Ottoman rule of Lebanon, all the people of the Aqoura fled to different parts of Lebanon. The al-Ghossain family moved to Kfir Hatna in the Batroun district, and then most of it moved to Ayn Abou near Baskinta in the Maten district.Five al-Ghossain brothers left Ayn Abou to settle in Hadath al-Joubbeh in the district of Bcharrei in the late 17th or early 18th century. The original name of the family in Lebanon is al-Ghossain (al in Arabic means "the" in English. Gh is pronounced like the cape Afrikaner, or the French pronounce the R). The name of the family was spelt in many different ways outside Lebanon because of the old Lebanese immigrants’ ignorance of western languages, and even western alphabet. It was left to the foreign writer to figure out how to write the strange foreign name in his language. ![]() ![]() |
